Our Approach to Psychotherapy

We believe therapy should be individualized to the person sitting in front of us. Our clinicians draw from a range of therapeutic approaches and work collaboratively with each client to identify meaningful goals and develop practical strategies for navigating challenges.

Our clinicians are trained in different areas, such as CBT, DBT, ACT, EFT, and more. We are constantly learning alongside our clients and continuing our education regularly.

Most importantly, our clinicans operate with a

person-centred approach.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Psychotherapy

We provide neurodiversity-affirming support for autistic and ADHD children, teens and adults. Our approach recognizes that neurodivergence is a natural variation in how people think, communicate, learn and experience the world. Therapy is individualized to each client's needs, strengths and goals.

FAQS

Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions! Please reach out if you have additional questions and a member of our team would be happy to assist you.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY CHILD NEEDS THERAPY?

If your child is experiencing really big feelings that are too big to manage and regulate through, it may be a good idea to seek help from a Child and Youth Therapist. Another possible situation in which your child could benefit from seeing a therapist could be during or after a big change in their life, such as changing schools, the loss of a loved one, or a parental separation. A therapist would work alongside your child in navigating this change and help the child feel more confident in managing these situations.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM THERAPY?

Psychotherapy can support people of all ages who are experiencing emotional, behavioural, mental health, relationship or life challenges. At Mindful Mental Health, we work with children, teens, adults, couples and families and tailor therapy to each client's individual needs and goals.

DO I GET TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS IN MY CHILD’S THERAPY SESSION?

In general, the therapy process works best when the therapist and parents work together in the best interest of the child, however, this can have limitations. For some kids, they and or the parents may feel it is necessary to sit in on the child’s session as it is facilitated. This can sometimes help the child feel more at ease. In other cases, the child may want their space and time with their therapist. In younger children, the therapist would consult with parents before or after session to discuss themes presented in session. In older adolescents and teenagers, they may feel as if they would like their sessions on their own without their parents. As teenagers are growing their sense of self, there may be a need for safety and request that some specifics remain confidential. Generally speaking, parent involvement is necessary when working with youth, even if certain things remain confidential. If you have questions about confidentiality, contact a therapist here at Mindful Mental Health for a free consultation.

WHAT IS THE PROCESS FOR NEW CLIENTS?

Here at Mindful Mental Health, we have a number of Registered Psychotherapists and Social Workers available, with no waitlist. You would be offered a free 15-20 minute phone or video consultation in order to discuss your presenting concerns, give you the chance to ask any questions you may have, and ensure you, your child and your therapist are a good fit for each other. From there, you would schedule an intake session with your chosen therapist and discuss background history, symptoms and potential treatment options.

HOW DO I USE MY INSURANCE?

Mindful Mental Health offers direct billing to select insurance providers. Eligibility and coverage depend on your individual insurance plan, so we recommend confirming your psychotherapy coverage with your provider before beginning treatment.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO ATTEND THERAPY?

The frequency of therapy depends on your individual needs, goals and circumstances. Some clients attend weekly, while others may benefit from appointments every two weeks or less frequently. Your clinician will work with you to determine a schedule that feels appropriate and sustainable.
