ABA THERAPY
In-clinic in Whitby, Ontario
Servicing in-home throughout Durham Region,
including Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax and Pickering
At Mindful Mental Health, we believe that effective support combines compassion with science. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a research-based approach grounded in the psychology of learning and behaviour. While ABA is widely recognized for its benefits in supporting individuals with autism, its principles extend far beyond — offering meaningful applications across the mental health field
Integrating ABA into Mental Health
When practiced ethically and collaboratively, ABA provides practical tools for developing emotional regulation, improving communication, reducing anxiety, and building daily living skills. These same principles form the foundation of many mental health approaches, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and other behavioural interventions.
At Mindful Mental Health, we use ABA through a modern, trauma-informed, and neurodiversity-affirming lens. This means focusing on autonomy, choice, and self-understanding — not compliance. Our goal is to help clients of all backgrounds strengthen their wellbeing and reach goals that are personally meaningful to them.
By integrating ABA into a mindful, person-centered model, we bridge the gap between behavioural science and emotional healing — supporting growth, connection, and confidence in everyday life

What is ABA Therapy?
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based approach that focuses on understanding how behaviour is influenced by a person's environment and experiences. ABA therapy can be used to teach and strengthen meaningful skills while supporting children and teens in areas that are important to their everyday lives.
ABA therapy may focus on communication, social skills, emotional regulation, learning, independence, daily living skills, and other individualized goals. At Mindful Mental Health, ABA programs are tailored to each child's unique strengths, needs, interests, and goals, with an emphasis on skills that support meaningful participation and quality of life.
Our Approach to ABA Therapy
Every child is different, which is why ABA therapy should never be a one-size-fits-all approach. Our team develops individualized programs based on each child's strengths, needs, abilities, and goals.
Our approach emphasizes:
-
Individualized treatment goals
-
Strengths-based and child-centred support
-
Evidence-based strategies
-
Skill development and independence
-
Ongoing progress monitoring
-
Collaboration with parents and caregivers
-
Skills that are meaningful and functional in everyday life
We believe ABA should support the whole child and focus on developing skills that improve their ability to communicate, connect, learn, participate, and navigate their world.
What Does ABA Therapy Look Like?
ABA therapy can look different for every child depending on their individual goals and needs. Sessions may involve structured teaching, play-based learning, practicing skills within everyday routines, and opportunities to generalize skills across different environments.
Mindful Mental Health offers both in-centre ABA therapy in Whitby
and in-home ABA therapy in Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, and Oshawa.
Assessment & Individualized Treatment Planning
ABA services begin with an assessment to better understand your child's current skills, strengths, needs, and areas where support may be beneficial. This information is used to develop individualized treatment goals and a plan for intervention.
Progress is monitored throughout treatment, allowing goals and strategies to be adjusted as your child develops new skills and their needs change.
Parent & Caregiver Involvement
Parents and caregivers are an important part of the ABA process. Depending on your child's needs and treatment goals, caregivers may be supported in learning strategies they can use within everyday routines and environments.
Collaboration with caregivers helps support consistency and gives families practical tools they can use outside of therapy sessions.
OAP Funding & Accessible
ABA Therapy
We understand that navigating the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) can be challenging. Families may face lengthy waitlists, delays in accessing funding, or may not have funding available to them at all.
At Mindful Mental Health, we don't want access to funding to be the only thing standing between a child and the support they need. In addition to working with families who have OAP funding, we offer a reduced private-pay rate for families who do not have funding.
Whether you are waiting for OAP funding, have used your available funding, or do not currently have access to funding, our team can discuss available options and help you determine what may work for your family.
